Hey, i found a 96 sol for sale and had some questions that hopefully someone can help me with. Its a 96 sol with a JDM B16 motor, intake, exhaust, headers, and a vtec controller. I was wondering roughfly how much horsepower it would be pushing, and what a vtec controller is. Its a great deal on it its 7 grand and has 65k miles on it. I was also wondering what i could do to it to make it faster with these mods. I was thinkin turbo of coarse, but what other things should i get for the engine to make it faster. And what does a blow off valve do, i think its the thing that makes that whistleing sound, but dont know what it does. Thanks for your help, i hope to get a sol soon!

i would first off suggest NOT buying a sol that has already been modded/raced. But of corse, to each his own. although, the car having very few miles as it does, i think i would buy it too haha. As far as a VTEC controller, i believe it allows you to time/tune when and where in the rpm band you want VTEC to kick in. other things to make it go faster...geez...start with block strengthening and getting prepared for a turbo application.

I'd be sure to ask for if it passed emissions after the turbo was installed and to see the slip on it if it did.

You know, I've become somewhat skeptical of some cars and their mileage as indicated on the odometer since I've seen so many clusters for sale on ebay. If this is a stocker and the mileage checks out with DOL, I might pay that price. However, if this thing is on it's third or fourth owner, I would be really cynical of that odometer...especially if this person has made mods to the car. If they can do an engine swap, they can damn well pull the cluster and replace it. Go to DOL and ask them for info on the VIN before committing to it or see if you can get a free carfax. It's not the most accurate but you can at least see how many times the title has changed hands.
The blow off valve is simply a surge bypass for the turbo boost. It usually works to bleed off excess pressure when you set an upper boost limit or when you decelerate and don't need the spooled up pressure created from the lag in turbo.

One more thing I would hope your very mechanically inclined, for a turboed car requires a lot more maintenance then a NA car. What comes to mind is oil changes at 1500 miles, checking the plugs at least once a week along with cap, rotor and wire checks (this includes the wiring and connectors) to make sure everything is at top condition so your not running into a lean fuel mixture or something. Then to take it in every six months to make sure it in tune so it's running in peak form. You are ready for that right? Turbos are not a just drive it only type car, so you understand what your getting into. Myself I'd never have one, to much work, I just like to enjoy the ride, not all the maintenance and down time that comes with one.
